Study questions

The following questions are intended as a guide to help you focus your studying. You must, however, do more than memorize the answers to each of these questions. You need to understand the material and be able to discuss the concepts in your own words. Use active study techniques as much as possible (i.e., you must do more than just read over your answers many times). I also recommend that you take advantage of the learning resources at the end of each chapter in the textbook, including the associated exercises on the textbook website (www.essentialbiology.com).

Chapter 5: The Working Cell.
1. What is an enzyme and what is its function? How does it accomplish its function?
2. What is the activation energy of a reaction? How does an enzyme affect activation energy?
3. Describe the induced fit model of enzyme function.
4. Describe two different ways inhibitors can affect enzyme function.

5. Be able to define and explain the following concepts: diffusion, osmosis, facilitated diffusion, active transport. In which of these does the transport occur with the concentration gradient? against? Which processes require an input of energy and which do not? Which are facilitated by a transport protein and which are not? Also be able to define and describe the bulk transport processes of endocytosis and exocytosis.
6. Be able to define and use the following terms: hypotonic, hypertonic, isotonic.
