Introduction to Scientific Method Lab
Evaluate the following hypotheses. Label each as GOOD if it is testable and falsifiable, BAD if it is not.

In my Ecology class this semester, we used nets to sample aquatic invertebrates found in a local creek, Swamp Creek. We collected 9 samples from fast-moving parts of the creek, and 9 samples from slow-moving parts of the creek. We standardized the sampling procedures across all samples. We took the samples back to the lab, and counted and identified all of the organisms we collected. We found all sorts of interesting organisms, including larval and adult insects, aquatic segmented worms, nematodes, water striders, and crayfish. One of the basic questions we were interested in was whether the speed of the current affects the abundance of invertebrates.
Answer the following questions related to the design of this study.
List the null hypothesis.
List the alternate hypothesis.
What is the dependent variable?
What is the independent variable?
List and explain at least three ways in which the sampling procedure should have been standardized (i.e., what do you think were our standardized variables?).
The graph below illustrates our results.

Based on
