Study questions
The following
questions are intended as a guide to help you focus your studying. You must,
however, do more than memorize the answers to each of these questions. You
need to understand the material and be able to discuss the concepts in your
own words. Use active study techniques as much as possible (i.e., you must
do more than just read over your answers many times). It may help in reviewing
the lab activities to study together with your lab group.

Osmosis lab
1. Review the biological
concepts of diffusion and osmosis. Describe the model system we used to demonstrate
diffusion and osmosis.
2. Describe the methods for the demonstration of diffusion that all groups
performed. The result was that the bag turned blue and the surrounding water
in the beaker stayed yellow. What do we conclude from this result about what
molecules the dialysis tubing was permeable to?
3. For the experiment your group designed, review (and be able to discuss)
the following:
a) your hypotheses (including an explanation for your alternate hypothesis)
b) your methods (including independent variable, dependent variable, standardized
variables, control treatment, etc.; also, how you analyzed your data to evaluate
the results)
c) your results
d) the conclusions you drew from the results. Was your hypothesis supported?
Why or why not? Give a biological explanation for your results.
e) What would you do differently next time to have greater confidence in your
results?
4. Be able to draw conclusions from graphs showing data from other experiments similar to the ones we performed.
